My Paintings
My most recent painting:
Kejimkujik Tree in the Late Summer
I was hiking at Kejimkujik National Park in Caledonia, Nova Scota, and I was struck by the beautiful golden glows that you’ll typically see in the last summer and fall on particular days. I’ve also read many books in the last several years on forests; each one seeming to bring new science to demonstrate their wonder and complexity, and yet there is still so much mystery.
I’m fascinated by how the root systems work in trees and plants in regards to how the fungal ecosystems beneath our feet communicate and send nutrients back and forth.
Regarding the technique, the golden feeling of this made me keep a very warm hue and tonal range. I also wanted a strength to this tree, and so brought in some bold darks as well to make it feel very visceral.
The original painting has sold, but prints will be available.
